Alex Duff

Michael O'Donnell

Alex and Michael both graduated from The University of Glasgow and the Glasgow School of Art in 2020 with master’s degrees in Product Design Engineering. They met at University in 2015, and in 2021 shortly after graduating developed 3D Clydeside Chess from concept through to manufacture and production.

DECEMBER 2018

10 copies of Alex's 2D 'Iconic Glasgow Chess' sell out at Glasgow School of Art pop-up shop within an hour. Pieces laser cut and etched from 3mm acrylic, board cut from 9mm plywood and pattern laser etched on. Packaging laser cut, laser etched and assembled.

FEBRUARY 2021

Began prototyping pieces - lots of failures and lessons along the way! Testing out colours, materials and geometries.

MAY 2021

Finalised board design - including custom Clydeside Chess pattern with logo.

2021 AND BEYOND

JANUARY 2021

Alex and Michael decide to create a 3D version - Clydeside Chess was born! Begin designing the pieces using 3D CAD software. Selection of most iconic landmarks to represent each piece.

MARCH 2021

Board prototyping to calculate the correct relative size of each piece. Use of card, paper and wood to find optimum board size.

JUNE 2021

Finished prototyping and locked in the designs for each piece. Began batch manufacture of pieces.
